What is Family These Days?

Matthew 12:46-50

46 While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, ‘Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.’* 48But to the one who had told him this, Jesus* replied, ‘Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?’ 49And pointing to his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’

“Family”

For some: Family is great, for some, Family is a loaded word / possibly baggage

We know: There is more than one kind of family than just biological…

Jesus story: “… who is my mother, and who are my brothers and sisters?…”

– “whoever does the will of my Father in heaven…”

– Sermon on the Mount: “..whoever hears my words AND PUTS THEM INTO PRACTICE…”

Lord’s Prayer: “…Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done…” -> makes us God’s family

Demonstrate What God’s Family can look like around here…

• Anyone who has thanked God for you / prayed for you – come up
• Anyone who would miss you if you weren’t here on a Sunday – come up
• Anyone who if you had an emergency at 2 a.m. would come help you – come up
• Anyone who has worked/served with you in church in some way, i.e. dishes, suppers, serving, etc.
• Anyone who has prayed the Lord’s Prayer with you – please stand
  God’s family may not be always exciting, fun things, etc.
