How To Hit The Wall Well
Big Idea: The walls that God allows have worth
X2: God is up to something good even in our darkest seasons
#1: Intense Spiritual Rough-Patches happen
- John the Baptist: obedient, knew Jesus/story, priest/Levite, living righteously
- Imprisoned, waiting… “Are you the one we are to expect, or are we to wait for another?”
- Dark Night of the Soul/doubting/”Wall”
- Ex. Like Shrub Cover -> at some point, cover removed -> exposed to full elements
#2: The Walls are Real -> facing them is reality
- What may prompt walls? “divorce, job loss, death of friend/family, cancer diagnosis, disillusioning church experience, betrayal, shattered dream, wayward child, car accident, infertility, deep desire to marry going unfulfilled, dryness in relationship with God, etc.”
- What happens? “Good feelings of God evaporate. We feel the door to heaven has been shut as we pray. Darkness, helplessness, weariness, sense of failure/defeat, emptiness, dryness descends upon us… We can’t see what God is doing and we see little visible fruit in our lives.”
#3: You can face your wall well
- Acknowledge -> normal part of the journey
- Be still, be sensitive
- Be Sensitive when others are experiencing this: tame the tongue, don’t shoot the wounded
