Matthew 22:34-40 Sermon Outline – PNSJ 9&10:30 a.m. – Nov. 6, 2016

Big Idea: Loving God is a way of life

X2: Our purpose is to make God’s love a lifestyle (His love is our lifestyle)

#1: Slowing Down

  • Volcano Ash Ex ->Hear sound birds at Heathrow Park
  • Only go further after we acknowledge this one
  • “Hard road, narrow way” -> SLOWING DOWN
  • Question: What else would Jesus have to say to slow you down?

#2: Breaking Free From Illusions/Lies

  • What are my doubts? Accusations? “Always/Never”, Despair?
  • Ex. “Don’t hope for things b/c when you hope for things they don’t come true”
  • “If I stop working hard all the time and rest, that is being lazy”
  • “Letting someone help you is a sign of weakness” – Blessing Bondage
  • “I am stupid” -> small group, friends continuously affirming the opposite
  • “I need to be perfect” -> Christian friends offering feedback, encouragement
  • “Sooner or later this will all fall apart.” – What healed it??

#3: Anchoring in God’s Love

  • Greatest Commandment -> rooted in God’s love for you/me/us
  • Expressed in Jesus -> life, death, resurrection, stories: Prodigal Son, etc.

o Communion: perpetual reminder of God’s Love -> consume God’s Love

  • How do we stay rooted in this? Anchored in God’s Love?
  • Daily/Weekly Rhythm: nature, meditation, silence, retreat, music, e-Bible, post verses, Psalms, Journal, God-Moments (constant reminders), simply think about it “Jesus loves me”

 

 

Rev. Michael Caines

I live to answer the question: “So how did you go from civil engineering to becoming a priest??” I have been here since 2008 when I arrived as the assistant. Since 2012 I have been leading the church as the Priest-in-Charge, and now as the full-time Lead Pastor. I grew up in Sussex, N.B. and then studied Civil Engineering at UNB Fredericton. After a brief period in youth ministry my wife and I moved to Uganda to teach and work at an Anglican Secondary School. After that, I studied at Wycliffe College in Toronto, ON and was ordained in 2008. I served with the Naval Reserve for a number of years but now as the Chaplain for 3 Field Artillery Regiment in Saint John and Woodstock, N.B. I love the outdoors and in my down time I enjoy running, sailing and playing music, but most importantly, time with my family.
