The Audacity of the Discipline of Submission
Big Idea: God’s love for us can free us to love others without an agenda
X2: It’s not just what God can do for us.. it’s what God can do with us.
Story/Context: Biblical theme: Submission: Abraham, Moses, Mary, James&John, Jesus “..not to be served, but to serve..”
#1: Submitting to God is real freedom
“A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.”
Jail Ex. -> Set free but set in our ways
Good Samaritan: priest/Levite free but still in prison
Samaritan: completely submitted to God and completely free
#2: What does Submission to God look like?
Freedom to not need our own way / put others needs above our own (INCLUDING DISCOMFORT)
Good Samaritan: may be – uncomfortable, inconvenient, cost
Healthy to Submit to: Triune God, Scripture (ultimate authority), Family (mutual submission), neighbors/run into daily lives, Church, broken&despised.
#3: Submission begins with accepting God’s Grace
Jesus example: “Cross-life” – “cross-death”
For us: reverse the order: die Christ’s cross-death so as to live the risen cross-life
On cross: “It is finished.” -> set free to follow Jesus / live cross-life
What if it’s not a prison but a tomb??
What does Jesus want to teach you about submission today?
Time to finally submit to God’s grace?
Time to submit to Scripture?
Time to submit to spouse/family?
Submit to Church family – take faith life seriously?
Time to submit to those around you/daily life
