How to Deal with Your Darkness – Part 2

October 30, 2016 By Rev. Michael Caines

How to Deal with Your Darkness – Part 2

(The Top Ten Iceberg Indicators)

Matthew 7:1-5 Sermon Outline – PNSJ 9&10:30 a.m. – Oct. 30, 2016

Big Idea: There is hope for us who accept God has more for us

X2: Jesus doesn’t promise mediocre change but mighty transformation

#1. Using God to Run from God -> isolating biblical truths -> “suffer little children…”

#2. Ignoring emotions of anger, sadness or fear: Jesus liberates these emotions

  • Jesus angry temple, Jesus wept, Jesus helped Peter when afraid on water

#3. Dying to the wrong things: die to joy vs die to selfishness -> no cards on Sunday/whistling

  • David danced before Lord, Michal “despised him in her heart”

#4. Denying the past’s impact on the present. Following Jesus does not instantly heal your past

  • Peter Scazzero and wife counseling… realize their marriage looked just like parents

#5: Dividing our lives into “Secular” and “Sacred” compartments: pg. 13 dad legacy

  • Peterson story: no distinction between spiritual lives and daily lives
Caught studying Bible? praying? Any signs of following Jesus Mon-Fri?

#6. Doing for God instead of being with God-> just do what we’re told to do…

  • Church analysis: over 60 ministries vs. a few things well

#7. Spiritualizing away conflict -> we bring childhood family tendency with us

  • Peacemaker? Hide? Blow up? ignore/suppress??.. “love is kind…” but where’s the full truth??
Pg. 33 Canadians struggle with this

#8. Covering over brokenness, weakness and failure –> I had to confess this last year

  • Brave face on Sunday tendency BUT… “My power is made perfect in weakness…”

#9. Living without Limits -> Boundaries

  • Setting healthy boundaries AND respecting healthy boundaries of others
  • Ex. Sunday Sabbath? Or all 7 days look the same? Purchase limit vs. spend whatever?
  • Respecting others limits: Seconds!!!

#10. Judging other people’s spiritual journey

  • acknowledge finite perspective / ALSO acknowledge power of culture
  • Youth have hard time… long hair judgement…
  • Playpark vs duty -> no one at home today thinking they should worshipping in a church now

Next step: Pray (Is this me?), Ask a trusted friend for feedback, set a goal with someone

Rev. Michael Caines

I live to answer the question: “So how did you go from civil engineering to becoming a priest??” I have been here since 2008 when I arrived as the assistant. Since 2012 I have been leading the church as the Priest-in-Charge, and now as the full-time Lead Pastor. I grew up in Sussex, N.B. and then studied Civil Engineering at UNB Fredericton. After a brief period in youth ministry my wife and I moved to Uganda to teach and work at an Anglican Secondary School. After that, I studied at Wycliffe College in Toronto, ON and was ordained in 2008. I served with the Naval Reserve for a number of years but now as the Chaplain for 3 Field Artillery Regiment in Saint John and Woodstock, N.B. I love the outdoors and in my down time I enjoy running, sailing and playing music, but most importantly, time with my family.
